Conway Wong is the head instructor of Shuri-Ryu Karate of St. Louis and Shingane Aikido Five Oaks. He has studied the martial arts since 1987. Mr. Wong began studying Shuri-Ryu Karate-Do in Phoenix, Arizona under the American martial arts pioneer Grandmaster Robert A. Trias at the Trias International Institute of Karate and Judo. Amongst the many instructors at Trias International that taught Mr. Wong karate include Master Dale Benson, Master Tony Bisanz, Master Larry Heimer, and Master Chris Hoshiyama. Sadly, Trias International was soon closed after Grandmaster Trias passed away in 1989.
Mr. Wong then became a student of Master Milt Calander in 1991 training with him privately and then at his All-American Martial Arts Academy in Mesa, Arizona. Mr. Wong was a dedicated student of Sensei Calander for 33 years and gives his eternal thanks to his friend, mentor, and teacher.
Several years after moving to St. Louis, Mr. Wong began studying Tenshin Aikido with Sensei Elliot Freeman of Three Rivers Aikido from 2004 to 2013. Mr. Wong taught Aikido to both children and adults as well as defensive tactics and violent behavior management. Mr. Wong regularly teaches Aikido classes at Five Oaks on Warson (Olivette Community Center) in Olivette, MO.
Mr. Wong has also studied Systema and Filipino Martial Arts with Master Instructor Ken O'Neill.
Mr. Wong continues his studies of Shuri-Ryu Karate-Do, White Crane Fist Style, and Okinawan Kobudo (weapons) with Grandmaster Robert Bowles of the International Shuri-Ryu Association.
Mr. Wong received his Renshi (expert instructor) title from Master Troy Price of the Shuri-te Bujutsu-Kai in 2022.
Mr. Wong has been rated in competition on the state, regional, and national levels. This includes placing in weapons, forms, and fighting in black belt divisions at the United States Karate Alliance's National and World Championships.
Mr. Wong holds memberships with the United States Karate Alliance, International Shuri-Ryu Association, Shuri-te Bujutsu-Kai, Aikikai, and the Gospel Martial Arts Union.
Mr. Wong is a Christian, married, and father of two children. Outside of teaching martial arts, he works as an engineer, holds undergraduate degrees in aerospace engineering (Arizona State University) and philosophy (University of Missouri St. Louis) with some graduate coursework in philosophy, and is active in his church.
