Aikido

What is Aikido?

Aikido ("the way of harmonizing energy") is a traditional Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969) who is referred to by aikido practitioners as O'Sensei ("Great Teacher").

Aikido emphasizes self-defense against getting struck, grabbed, or taken down.  It is a totally defensive martial art that uses hand deflections, joint locks, throws, takedowns, and pins by using the aggressor's own momentum against him.  Aikido practice uses the entire body in learning to fall and tumble without injury making it a great workout and stress reliever.  Safety of practice is always emphasized.  Additional mental benefits include increased focus, discipline, and self-confidence.

What is SHINGAnE Aikido?

Shingane St. Louis Aikido Dojo was founded by Sensei Mike Swederska in Maplewood, Missouri.  Sensei Swederska has trained and taught Aikido for over twenty years.  Sensei Swederska studied Aikido at Three Rivers Aikido under Sensei Elliot Freeman and is currently a student of Sensei Roberto Garza.  Upon his retirement from active teaching, Sensei Swederska encouraged his students to continue studying Aikido with his friend Sensei Conway Wong.

Shingane Aikido is named after the inner core of a Japanese katana.  Japanese Katana are known for being of superior beauty and quality by combining two types of steel:  shingane and kawagane.  The shingane forms the inner core of the blade and is made from low carbon steel.  Shingane steel is soft and ductile allowing the katana to bend and flex without breaking.  The outer jacket of the sword is made from high carbon steel (the kawagane) which makes the blade sharp, strong, and resistant to damage.  The combination results in the Japanese katana having a sharp and strong blade that can still flex without breaking.
